Don't have a dog to bring? If you don't have a dog to bring to one of these gorgeous dog friendly beaches or parks, but want one? Come to one of our next Homes Fur All Event! We host a number of pet adoption opportunities where there are lots of rescues looking for loving homes. Dog Etiquette 1. Take charge Train your dog to come when he is called with a number of different tactics. Use a word, phrase or sound that he's not likely to hear at the park and reward him with extra-special treats during training. Your dog needs to know that you're in control and the alpha animal, this is the key to dog obedience when other canines are around. 2. Pause before you enter A well-designed park will have an entrance with two gates. Enter the first gate with your dog on a leash, then pause. If there areseveral dogs swarming the gates, this isn't the time to barge in. A pause will allow other dogs the time to get used to yours which will keep all dogs involved a little calmer than if you were to barge in through the gates. 3. Pay attention. Once inside the park, it's your job to keep an eye out for the dogs. Always know where your dog is and what he’s doing. If you see trouble brewing, call him back right away. Know when your dog has pooped so you can scoop, too. Many parks provide plastic bags, but you should always bring your own. 4. Read the signals. Be aware of your dogs body language and signals. Your dog should demonstrate good behavior if you plan to take him to the park. Make sure you have the ability to read canine behavior. Dogs at play have relaxed ears, wagging tails, and may "play bow" with their front end down to the ground. Upset hounds hold their tails at half-mast or between their legs. Their ears are pinned back, and their pupils shrink so you can see the whites of their eyes. A dog that’s ready to rumble will be tense, hold his head high, and lean forward. His ears will point up or forward, too. While growls are common in play, snarling with lips curled back isn’t. If you see these danger signs, redirect the dog with treats or a toy or clap or make a loud noise. 5. Know what to do if a fight breaks out Despite your best efforts, it can happen. Make sure you're ready.
6. Don't take puppies to the park They can be hard to control and the park isn't the place to train a puppy. Also, those who haven’t had all their shots can be exposed to diseases. Wait until your pup is 6 months old before you go. 7. Know when to go Basic good manners should help you avoid most problems. A little extra effort on your part will help. But don't go to the dog park if your furry pal:
