Meet this incredible team that will change the lives of children in need forever! They are truly an amazing group of people who are dedicated to helping children overcome mental and/or emotional disorders. Our Homes Fur All mission is to help fundraise to cover the cost to fund the training of Marvel (a rescue dog training to be a therapy dog!) to be donated to Jes (a therapist who works with children with disorders). Our therapy dog trainer is Sarah, please check out their stories below!

Meet Marvel!
Marvel is the therapy dog in training!

Marvel is currently in training to be a therapy dog to improve the lives of children with mental and emotional disorders.
Marvel is a 2-year-old black lab, who came to Freedom Service Dogs in November of 2016.  He came from an organization called Disco’s Dogs, which is an organization that adopts dogs from shelters and rescue organizations and help train each one individually to aid children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and developmental disabilities. He is a wonderful dog, which a huge love to help others and cannot wait to be a therapy dog!

Meet Jes!

Jes is the therapist who will be receiving Marvel after he completes his training. She works with children with mental and psychiatric disorders.
“I have always had a heart for others.  I grew up in New Jersey and found myself to gravitating to working on homelessness issues and working with children with trauma histories. I graduated grad school in 2011 and began my social work career.  I have worked doing in home therapy the majority of my career.  Currently I work with families through Tennyson Center for Children who have recently had a child who was hospitalized for a psychiatric disorder and are reintegrating into the home setting and trying to maintain safety.  I have always wanted to integrate animal assisted therapy into my practice because of the ability to connect with clients in different capacities and the somatic interventions that are available with a dog companion.  Marvel will work both with my in home clients in different capacities and in our school setting helping in therapy groups. Tennyson’s mission is to change lives and give hope.  They provide residential, day treatment and in home services to the community.  I love to be outdoors and soak up everything Colorado has to offer so Marvel will get some adventure time as well.”

Meet Sarah!

Sarah is training Marvel to be of assistance to Jes and the Children she helps through therapy!
“I grew up training dogs in 4-H, competing in obedience and agility.  After high school, I studied psychology at the University of Washington while working in a doggie daycare and boarding kennels at a 24-hour animal hospital.  I later went on to manage that daycare and together with my team we reinvented our program to be healthier and more fulfilling for the dogs by rotating groups of dogs through different activities during the day like training, small play groups, massage, walks, food puzzles, etc.  In the evenings I taught puppy classes, obedience, and foundation agility classes.  After leaving Seattle for Denver in 2008, I found Freedom Service Dogs and have been training here ever since.  I live with two huskies, a border collie that I adopted through Freedom Service Dogs, and a cat that I also adopted through Freedom Service Dogs. I have been Marvel’s trainer since he came to us in November 2016.”

Helping People with Permanent Disabilities
People with mobility impairment must overcome challenges for even the simplest life tasks – picking up dropped keys or a pen, opening a door, turning on a light, getting the remote control, providing balance to assist with transferring to and from a wheelchair, and locating and acquiring the phone in case of emergency.

At any given point we have upwards of 50+ people on a waiting list who struggle for on average more than a year as we seek funding to provide a service dog to suit their specialized needs.
The FSD Difference
Rescue Dogs
FSD rescues dogs from various parts of the country and custom trains them to become amazing service dogs. FSD does not have a puppy-breeding or raising program. Our experience is that there are plenty of unwanted dogs in shelters that are eager to get that second chance and a whole new career. Since our start in 1987, we have found that with dedicated training these dogs become heroes to those with disabilities, transforming their lives forever.

Custom Training
FSD matches dogs to their new partner and custom trains the dog to do the specific tasks required by each individual.

Provide Lifetime Support
FSD maintains contact with clients to provide annual recertification for the service dog and give hands-on support in new skill development.

Positive Training Methods
FSD uses positive reinforcement – click/treat – to shape play behaviors (retrieve, tug, paw, touch) into helpful tasks. FSD service dogs wag while they work!
