Every 4th of July there is a crisis in the animal shelter system because the July 4th fireworks scare pets and cause them to run away from home and shelters are temporarily overwhelmed with an influx of dogs and cats. YOU CAN HELP! If you can find a place in your home and heart to foster a rescue doggie or kittie from mid-June to mid July, you will SAVE A LIFE! Our “4 Weeks For Life” program is all about preventing the overflow of rescue pets. If four weeks isn’t possible, fostering for any amount of time can really make a big difference! Be A Hero - Foster A Rescue Pet - Save A Life! Homes Fur All is a 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to helping the people and rescue pets of LA.

Community Garden Heals Once Terrorized Drew Street Former gang den site becomes a community garden. By EGP News Report - http://egpnews.com/ A vacant lot where gang members, drug deals and crime once thrived under the roof of a gang den, was inaugurated as a community garden on Saturday, June 25, 2011. The garden’s parcels have already been distributed through a lottery, now the work of harvesting and sustaining a culture of hope on Drew Street begins. Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, who represents the area, said the site was once home to the violence, drugs and fear that overwhelmed the neighborhood. “For me it wasn’t enough to tear down the gang headquarters that stood here. I wanted to build something positive in its place. This garden will be a place where the community will gather and grow stronger,” he said, adding it will anchor the neighborhood with roots of “peace, hope and community.” Northeast LAPD Capt. William Murphy recalled that the portion of the neighborhood where Drew Street and Estara Avenue meet was once a center of crime activity. “Forty-eight to 60 [crimes] a year—just on this street, 100 yards,” said Murphy. “this year to date, there have only been four crimes. That’s an 80 percent reduction in crime, with no violent crimes, they’ve all been property crimes.” The Glassell Park Community Garden is located at 3304 Drew Street, where an Avenues gang “Satellite House” stood just two years ago. The house was demolished after city officials condemned it as a nuisance property, and Wells Fargo, which held the title of the land, donated the property to the city. A year before the demotion, a crack down on the Drew Street clique resulted in the raid of more than a dozen homes, which resulted in the confiscation of a cache of drugs and automatic weapons. The principal tenant of the home, Maria Leon, and some of her 13 children were arrested in the police operation. Leon was sentenced to 8 years and three months in federal prison after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy; half of her older children are in prison or dead from gang-related violence, according to the authorities. But that is now in the densely populated area’s past. The Glassell Park Neighborhood Council and Drew Street Neighborhood Watch each received a parcel to garden, said Bradley, who said community organizations were originally excluded from the efforts to create the site, but added he is glad to see the project moving forward. “We are pleased we have the opportunity to be a part, and to maintain a visible part of the crime prevention and intervention in the area,” said Bradley. “No one can police the community better than the community,” he said. During the lottery distribution of the plots, residents who live within four blocks of the site, seniors and apartment dwellers without a yard were given extra weight, said Yusef Robb, a spokesperson for Garcetti. Members of the Los Angeles Community Gardens were on hand to help Garcetti cut the ribbon and publicly committed to future programming at the site. The councilmember’s office and Wells Fargo donated money for the LA Conservation Corps to transform the vacant lot into a garden, and “start up” plants and seeds have been donated, Robb said. “The Micheltorena Community Garden in our District sent some fruit trees; other fruit trees were found by our staff for the garden,” he said. “From there, folks tend the garden with the help of the LA Community Garden Council, which we engaged to help out. Eastern Group Publications was founded in 1979 by the husband and wife team Jonathan and Dolores Sanchez, but its roots were planted in the community long before that. In 1945, Joseph Kovner founded the Eastside Sun which became the main source of news for east L.A’s communities. The Sanchez’s bought the chain when it was on the brink of bankruptcy.
Today, EGP’s Hispanic owned newspapers boast a circulation of more than 80,600 households and businesses. A loyal readership of nearly 450,000, our newspapers provide an excellent advertising vehicle for companies trying to reach consumers in English and/or Spanish. Our community news focus gives readers the information they want most: news and events that are happening in their own neighborhoods. Our chain of newspapers include Eastside Sun, Northeast Sun, Bell Gardens Sun, Commerce Comet, Montebello Comet and the Vernon Sun.
Thanks to the amazing people of NELA, specifically Maggie Quiroz, so many children had the opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny, hunt for Easter eggs, and went home happy with lots of freebies donated by members of our community!
The Fitzburgh Realty team is proud to be a part of the celebration and was excited to have the opportunity to donate books for the children!
We also had a great time spreading awareness on "How to be a Hero" and so happy to be able to add to our foster network for saving the lives of rescue animals!

MEET PIPER
Piper is an adorable and lovable Maltese Mix. He is between 2-4 years old.
“Rescue From the Hart” and “Walk Me Home Rescue” joined forces to save Piper from euthanasia. He was brought to the LA North Central Shelter with multiple jaw fractures, a skull fracture and a damaged eye due to some form of blunt force trauma.
After three surgeries, Piper is finally healthy and ready to find his forever home. He currently lives with a foster family that includes 3 teenagers and 3 other dogs.
Piper is house trained, loves to snuggle and has learned the joy of playing with other dogs. Piper would do best in a home with at least one other confident dog to help lead the way.
Due to the trauma Piper endured prior to his rescue, Piper can be a bit insecure in new environments and can be leash reactive. He would do best in a home with seasoned adopters that are eager and willing to take part in his ongoing rehab. Training classes will be required and provided to his adopters.
After such a tragic start we want Piper to know nothing but security and love.

MEET TUTU!
Tutu is our newest doggie rescue adoption
who found his furever home through the Homes Fur All Program at Eagle Rock Bark
Tutu is a 4 year old Brussels griffon mix Adopt Me Rescue rescued her from south Los Angeles shelter. She was surrendered by her previously family. She was given to them by a friend as a gift but they knowingly knew they were not allowed to own pets and the landlord found out and told them to get rid of her.
Tutu shut down at the shelter and was so scared when we met her. Once we brought her home she began to open up and we could tell she was abused because she would cower if we tried to pet her. After a few months she began to calm down but was overlooked for some reason. Once Adopt Me Rescue went to Eagle Rock Bark they found out that this family also lived in Eagle Rock and were interested in adopting her. They recently lost their dog and the husband wanted to surprise the family but his secret came out when his wife saw her online and they both agreed to apply for her. They met Tutu and fell instantly in love. They actually got her the same day of Eagle Rock Bark and it’s been heaven ever since. She even has her own Instagram page! We are so happy for Tutu as she found her perfect family!
THANK YOU ADOPT ME RESCUE
We are so happy the Tutu is adjusting so well and is fitting in with her new family. Adopt Me Rescue is a foster based small dog rescue here in Los Angeles California. Urgent need for foster volunteers for shelter dogs and cats to make room for lost/frightened pets who have escaped fires.
The risks that animals face during wildfires include exposure to smoke, anxiety, getting lost after fleeing a blaze, and of course the serious threat from the blazes themselves, including injuries that could potentially be fatal. Here is how you can help: PULL FROM THE SHELTERS East Valley and West Valley have been experiencing higher intakes. If you have the space, these two shelters are in greatest need of rescue support. West LA has had a few more intakes than usual too but EV & WV are the priority.
BE A FOSTER (DOG OR CAT)
We encourage you to be temporary fosters for LAAS. Foster instructions: Fill out the application below and take it to the shelter during business hours. Be sure to bring a valid ID NOTE: if you live in LA city and have existing dogs, they must be licensed. The foster dog going into the home must also not exceed city limit of three dogs.
DONATE
Donations can be dropped off at East Valley or West Valley shelters and they'll deliver to emergency sites OR drop off donations directly at the animal evacuation sites (Sunland Rec Center, Hansen Equestrian Center and Pierce College). Most items are well supplied but here is a list of their current needs: Filtration masks Goggles Duct tape Snacks for emergency staff who are working at the animal evacuation sites

Homes for people, Homes for pets, HOMES FUR ALL
Homes Fur All is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the community and helping to find homes for rescue animals. MEET BAILEY! Bailey is our newest doggie rescue adoption who found his furever home through the Homes Fur All Program! Here is his story: Bailey was found as a stray weighing just over 3 lbs at 8 yrs old. He was dirty, with fly bitten ears, an upper respiratory infection, horrible teeth, and not neutered. He was taken to East Valley Animal Shelter where he waited and hoped that he would be claimed. When he became available not one person was there waiting for him. When Bailey’s foster mom, Jennifer found out that this little tiny dog was sitting in the shelter sick she rushed to the shelter to get him. Bailey had an irregular heart beat so his neutered was deferred so he was able to go home right away. After seeing the vet it was found that he was so scared in the shelter his heart rate had slowed down. After about a week in foster care it was back to normal and he could undergo surgery to get neutered and get the dental he so desperately needed. After some time it was also clear that Bailey had some urinary issues and after tests it was found that he had a serious bladder infection and early Kidney failure. Once he was treated and on the proper food he was no longer showing these signs and was quickly becoming much healthier. Bailey took some time to warm up but once he did he became a very loving and affectionate dog with both people and other dogs. It was clear that Bailey would need a special home that would understand not only his tiny size but his medical needs. Adopt Me Rescue, knew that this could take some time and they were willing to wait. Well, they got lucky! Three months to the day that they pulled Bailey he was placed in his furever home. Michelle O’Wing and her family came to meet Bailey at Eagle Rock Bark and we knew that they were the perfect fit! Michelle and her family previously had multiple little Chihuahuas that they had taken in at older ages with multiple different medical conditions. They are used to prescription diets, daily medications, picky little dogs, and the needs of small chihuahuas (with housing accommodations already in place). Bailey, Michelle, and her daughter Tiffany connected right away. The house check and adoption were scheduled for the following weekend where Bailey got to meet Michelle’s husband Ron and their current dog Coco. We could not have asked for a better home! Adopt Me Rescue has already received multiple pupdates including this one “Hi Jennifer! Wanted to let you know how good your little boy is doing. He’s very relaxed & curious. Still a little nervous about everything big & new, but overall I’m very impressed how he’s adjusting- you raised him well! He gets most excited to eat!!!” THANK YOU ADOPT ME RESCUE! We are so happy the Bailey is adjusting so well and is fitting in with his new family. Adopt Me Rescue is a foster based small dog rescue here in Los Angeles California. They are a dedicated group of people rescuing the sick, old seniors, injured, overlooked and forgotten dogs due to their medical conditions or red listed dogs from the shelter that are going to be euthanized. Adopt Me Rescue often rescues "special needs" dogs from shelters. Adopt Me Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They are a completely volunteer organization and they can't do it without you. EAGLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL KEY CLUB
Key Club is an international, non-profit, service oriented community service club. What makes Key Club special is that it is completely operated and run by High School students (with the help of faculty and Kiwanis advisers and sponsors). In Key Club, we emphasize the importance of keeping our community safe and clean. Key Club is a branch of Kiwanis, a well known organization that helps the world one step at a time. Within Kiwanis, Key Club has helped raise money in partnership with UNICEF, The Eliminate Program, PTP, and other various charitable organizations. In fact, we have even been able to cure diseases completely from regions on Earth!
Key Club participates in every service project imaginable: serving food to the homeless, raising money for a cause, setting up for an event, serving as waiters, gardening projects, etc. Basically, if there is ever an event, persons, community, projects, in need, Key Club will always be there to help. Service aside, Key Club also emphasizes on family, Ohana, and spirit. After all, doing something is always more fun when you're with the ones you love. We celebrate annually at Six Flags Magic Mountain, to raise further funds towards PTP and to reflect and the hundreds of thousands of hours of service every individual puts into our community.
